Connect an exchange (whenever you’re ready)

You don’t need to do this on day one. Paper trading works without a connected exchange, it uses real market prices with virtual money, so feel free to explore the platform first. When you are ready to go live, connecting an exchange takes about five minutes, and we’ve written a whole guide on exactly how to do it safely.

Build your first strategy

This is genuinely the core of the platform, so it’s worth taking slowly the first time. Head to Strategy Templates and build out your entry conditions (when should a trade open), exit conditions (when should it close), and execution settings (market or limit orders). We’ve written a full walkthrough of the strategy builder if you want the detailed version, but the short version is: start with something simple. A strategy with two clear conditions beats a strategy with nine conditions that never quite line up.

Test it before you trust it

Once you’ve built a strategy, don’t jump straight to live trading. Run it in Test mode (paper trading) for a while, and consider backtesting it against historical data first to get a sense of how it behaves across different market conditions. Both of these cost you nothing but time, and both will save you from some genuinely painful surprises later.

Automate it with an automation

Strategies don’t run on their own. They need an automation that says when to run, on which pairs, and with how much money. Head to Automations, pick your template and a risk profile, choose your pairs and timeframe, set the schedule, and give it a budget. The automation sizes every trade from that budget and can never lose more than it. From there, it runs on its own, checking in via Telegram alerts if you’ve set those up, so you’re not stuck watching a browser tab all day.

Set up your safety net

Before you go live with real money, take five minutes on the Risk page to set up a risk profile: stop-loss, position sizing and loss limits. This is the boring part nobody wants to spend time on, and it’s also the part that actually protects your capital when a strategy has a bad week. Every strategy has a bad week eventually. Plan for it now, not while it’s happening.

What’s next

From here, most people spend a few weeks running strategies in Test mode, tuning based on what they see, and gradually moving the ones that hold up to live trading. There’s no rush. TradeFIQ isn’t going anywhere, and neither is the market. Take the time to actually understand what your strategy is doing before you trust it with real capital, that patience is genuinely the biggest edge most people are leaving on the table.
